With sad hearts we announce the passing of Irene Toverud on October 1, 2021. We shall miss her but are so grateful she was blessed with a

long life of 103 years. A life full of great achievements, an abundance of friends and many, many life experiences.

Irene was born August 18, 1918 in Vegreville, Alberta, the first born child of Edna and Bert Francis. She married a local lad, Alf Toverud, on January 6, 1943 and together they farmed on land located north of Viking – land still in the family which pleased Irene very much.

Irene was a very community minded person. Always volunteering when required even in the days of the one room school, helping organize events, providing music (playing the piano), and a charter member of the Rosegarland WI when it was organized in 1945.

Irene and Alf moved to town in the sixties to stay with Irene's father who was recently widowed. They still continued to farm until their daughter and son in law took over the farming. It did not take long for Irene to become totally immersed in her new community, volunteering for many organizations. The Lutheran church was very important to her, if you visit with Pastor Alvin he can tell many stories about Irene and her involvement with Sunday School and with many aspects of the church.

Irene's daily routine included having coffee with neighbours and friends downtown at the local café until life intervened and she was unable to

drive anymore. A move to Vialta Lodge and eventually the Long Term Care Center provided her with end of life care.

Irene was predeceased by her husband Alf, daughter Lynn (Bill), parents, sister Anne, brother Jim, cousin Art. She is survived by 3 daughters – Shirley Anne (Henry) Pobuda, Karen (Denny) Rabby and Andrea (Opie) (Joe) Lansing, 13 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

A private funeral service will be held with family and close friends due to the Government of Alberta's COVID-19 restrictions.
