Frank Fornal was born near Bruce, Alberta, on October 24, 1937. He lived his entire life in Torlea, where he farmed and raised his family. Frank passed away on August 16, 2026, on the farm, near his favorite tree, which he had planted many years ago.

Frank was born to John and Maria Fornal and was one of ten children. In 1976, he married Debi Fountain, and together they shared 50 years of marriage and raised two sons, Jay and Reed.

As a teenager, Frank contracted polio and spent a period of time in an iron lung. Despite this difficult experience, he went on to lead a long and healthy life, never letting it define him.

Frank spent a few of his early years working on the pipeline with his brothers before returning to Torlea to farm. He loved working outdoors and took great pride in his large garden each year. He especially enjoyed growing tomatoes in his greenhouse and was always happy to share the garden’s bounty with friends and neighbours. Over the years, Frank planted many trees around the farm, leaving a lasting mark on the place he loved.

Frank enjoyed watching the Edmonton Oilers and rodeos on TV. One of his favorite pastimes was going to the casino, which he jokingly called “finger therapy.” He also enjoyed going to town for coffee with the coffee crew. Frank was always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbour in need.

Animals were another important part of Frank’s life. He enjoyed his dogs and cats, raised cattle for many years, and, when his boys were young, had a miniature horse named Duncan.

Frank will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Debi; sons Jay (Hollee) and Reed (Amanda); grandchildren Emery, Ellea, Benjamin and Ava; sister Emily Lefsrud; sisters-in-law Connie and Annemarie; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Maria; siblings Anne Sager (Joe), Stanley, Mike (Rose), Louie, Teddy (Flo), Helen Nearing (Archie), Joe and Eddie; brother-in-law Joseph Lefsrud; niece Joanne Sager; and nephew Jim Sager.

Frank will be remembered for his love of the land, his generous garden, his sense of humour, his helping hand, and the many friendships he made throughout his life. His roots ran deep in Torlea, just like the many trees he planted on the farm.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the Viking Hospital Foundation in honor of Frank.
