Jennie Christina Bird was born on August 3, 1923 in Hafford, SK, to William and Edith Wolfe. She was the second youngest of a family of six, and she spent her early childhood playing amongst the "crooked trees". When Mom was eleven the family moved to Ordale, SK, where she finished school. As was the custom at that time, she went to work as a hired girl, where she met our Dad, Ken Bird. They were married on March 21, 1942 and lived on the farm at Eldred SK, where their family of four was born. In 1956, they moved to Viking, where they found their true home.
They quickly became involved in community and church activities. Over the years Mom helped with all catering done by the United Church, she was treasurer for the Ag Society, for the Beaver Manor Foundation and for the Handi-Van Society. If you needed something done, "Ask Jennie."
Mom was a talented and accomplished seamstress, so owning a fabric store was a natural fit. She taught sewing, she custom made curtains and drapes, and she sewed tirelessly for her family. Over the years she made quilts for her four children, her twelve grandchildren, and 27 of her great grands
before dementia overtook her.
Mom was predeceased by her parents and her five siblings, by her husband Ken Bird, and by her dear grandson Major Ken Calkins. She is survived by her four children Madeline (Gerry) Scott, Larry (Lynda) Bird, Bev (Don) Hall, and Janet (Fred) Kicia, eleven grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.
Mom passed away peacefully on Nov.24, with Bev and Janet at her side. "Do not go gentle into that great dark night. Rage, rage against the fading light". Mom raged against injustice, waste, and most of all the dementia that finally took her after nine years in care. She was truly one of a kind, and she is sadly missed.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at the Viking United Church, Viking, Alberta with Rev. Scott Reynolds officiating. A Private Inurnment at Viking Cemetery, Viking, Alberta.
