Obituary

With grateful hearts for a life so beautifully lived, we remember John Thomas "JT" Antos, who passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on October 7, 2026.

John was born on April 29, 1936, in Viking, Alberta, to John and Agnes Antos. As the eldest of seven children, he grew up on the family farm near Prague, Alberta. At 17, he left home with a local crew to work on an oil rig in Saskatchewan. However, the pull of home and family eventually brought him back to Alberta. It was there that he began his life with Loie. While Loie worked as a bank teller, JT found employment as a grain buyer with the Alberta Wheat Pool, first in Viking and later in Vegreville. In July of 1964, they purchased what would become the family farm south of Viking, and he dedicated himself to building and growing the operation. He took great pride in progressing and keeping up with the ever-changing agricultural industry.

John remained deeply active in all aspects of the farming operation throughout his life. At 89, he was still operating machinery and combining during last year's harvest. Farming was more than a livelihood to John; it was a way of life and at his very core. When once asked what his hobbies were, his reply was simply, “growing wheat.” John’s passion for farming was evident to all, and it is a legacy he proudly passed down through the generations.

John is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Loie, and his four children: Cheryl & John Antos Bodnar, Gail & Blair Grant, Dean & Nola Antos, Darren & Karen Antos. John was blessed with 10 grandchildren: Amy & Tony, Jess & John, Justin & Bree, Stephany & Damon, Braedan & Mikayla, Jallysa, Cody & Emma, Lexi & Jake, Bailey & Casie and Caitlyn; as well as four bonus grandchildren: Michael and Charlie & Warren, Melissa and Matthew. John also had the honour of loving nine great-grandchildren: Baker, Austyn, Parker, Linden, Corbin, Stetson, Luna, Willa, and Declan; and four bonus great-grandchildren: Grady, Ryker, Anna, and Sadie.

He is also survived by his sister, Ag (Ray); his brothers, Stan, Ed (Myrn), and Dave; and his sister-in-law, Lou. John was predeceased by his parents, John & Agnes; his sisters, Lydia, and Annie (John); his sisters-in-law, Marilyn and Arlie; his parents-in-law, Sigrid & Ludwig Lindseth; his sister-in-law, Margaret (Earl); his brothers-in-law, Marvin and Gordie; and his nieces, Tracy and Lori.

Due to Viking Hall renovations, a memorial service for John will be held at Killam Hall on Thursday, October 15th at 2:00 pm.

If so desired, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
