Ricky Myles Schmaus was born to Victor and Robina Schmaus on November 19, 1962 in Camrose, Alberta. He was the youngest of 8 children and lived on a farm south of Ryley, Alberta until the age of 2 when his parents bought a farm north of Bruce, Alberta in 1964. As a child and being the youngest, Rick was subject to a lot of good ideas from his older siblings. One time in particular when he was 5, his two older sisters Laurie and Barbara along with his brother Barry had heard you could make a lot of money selling baby skunks. There was litter of skunks under a granary in the yard, and Barry also heard that baby skunks wouldn't spray; so naturally Rick being the smallest the decision was made by the older siblings that he should be the one to go get them. Well Rick found out in short order that baby skunks do in fact spray. Their mother Robina was not impressed. It took a lot of tomato juice bathing by her to get the smell off of him. To say the least she was also not impressed with the other children. Another childhood story that had come up was when Rick along with his brother Lyle at ages of 6 and 8 where driving Victor's 1951 Ford. Somehow, they backed or drove into a granary, and folded the door into an accordion. No one really knows what really happened as to this day both always say it was the other one's fault.

Rick made a lot of friends as a child, and he always liked to socialize. David Foster, David Sarky and Rick became good friends while they were in school and continued to be after. Both David and David mentioned that Rick always had away with women that continued with him until the very end. Rick went to School in Bruce, then Holden and completed Grade 11 before quitting to start farming. He then proceeded to get his class one then started his trucking career where he hauled gravel, asphalt, general freight throughout North America. He drove through snow, sludge as well many other conditions all while going out to help on the farm whenever he could. Rick came back in 1998 to help his father Victor on the Farm full time during the growing season. He purchased the farm from his parents on 2004, which is also when he started having health issues which ultimately caught up to him in the end.

Being the youngest in the family, Rick got to know his nieces and nephews very well, as he was still living at home on the farm. He was a fan favourite to all children having a very special relationship with many including his nieces and nephews.

Rick passed away April 4, 2023 in Edmonton at the Grey Nuns Hospital. He was Predeceased by his parents Victor and Robina; son Shane Schmaus; his 3 brothers Ronald, Murray and Merel; father-in-law Delbert Chalmers; nephew Kurtis Jeffery.

Rick was survived by his Son Kyle; Daughter Kaydee; Sisters Barbara Smith, Laurie (Daniel) Foster; Brothers Barry (Kathleen), Lyle (Donalie); brother-in-laws Murray (Colleen) Chalmers, Barry (Jackie) Chalmers; grandchildren Brooklynn Schmaus, Kadence Schmaus and Dyson Schmaus; nephews Jordan Schmaus, Ryan Foster, Justin Foster, Kyle Schmaus, Craig (Rebbeca) Schmaus, Chad Chalmers and Dustin Chalmers; niece's Stacy (Kyle) Thomas, Miranda Schmaus, Chelsey (Nathan) Cook, Danielle (Daniel) Schmaus, Nora (Joshua) Bird, Crystal (Wade) Dawson and Catherine (Jesse) Chalmers; as well many great nephews nieces and close friends.

A Celebration of life will be held at the Bruce Community Center in Bruce, Alberta at 1:00 p.m. on April 15, 2023. We ask in lou of flowers that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation 119 14 St NW #100, Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6.
